French Family Gites are located in the south west of France in the Charente Maritime region between La Rochelle and Cognac; in a small village called Courant near St. Jean d'Angély medieval town with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. The Charente Maritime is one of the four Departments which make up the Grand Region of Poitou Charentes. The Poitou Charentes is known for having the second highest sunshine hours in France and, after the Loire Valley, the second highest number of Chateaux. Courant is a small village of 300 residents and is surrounded by rolling countryside, sunflower and tobacco fields. Whilst only 90 miles north of Bordeaux, Courant is very accessible by car via any of three north western ports: St Malo in three and a half hours, Caen in five hours and Cherbourg in about five and a half hours. All these ports operate overnight ferries where you can take a cabin, have a meal and watch a film, enjoy live music and even cabaret acts. For those coming by Eurostar, Calais is 7 hours away.
